Meetings

The Atlanta Chapter of the SAR meets at noon on the second Thursday of each month with the following exceptions:

The February meeting is held on the Saturday closest to Washington’s Birthday at a venue typically announced in January
There are no July or August meetings

2018 Meeting Schedule & Programs

The Atlanta Chapter welcomes both members and those interested in the SAR to attend our meetings. Those attending the meeting generally arrive before noon to socialize with others with lunch beginning at noon followed by a topical presentation. The cost of lunch at our regular meetings is $22. NOTICE: Change In Meeting Location. The Atlanta Chapter has a new home for its regular meetings.

Jan 18, Program: DeKalb History Center presented by Fred Mobley, Archivist, DeKalb History Center
Feb 25, Program: George Washington Luncheon
March 9, Program: Georgia Heroes of the American Revolution presented by Robert C. Jones is an author and speaker who served as President of the Kennesaw Historical Society for 21 years (1994-2015) and has written 40+ books on various historical topics, including the Civil War, Revolutionary War, World War I & II, the War of 1812 and ghost towns.
April 13, Program: Valley Forge presented by Jim Reason, Teacher and Coach at Duluth High School, Gwinnett County for 18 years, he teaches AP U.S. History. He has also coached football, baseball and tennis. He has been teaching for 23 years.
May 11, Program: Spies during the Revolution presented by Robert C. Jones is an author and speaker who served as President of the Kennesaw Historical Society for 21 years (1994-2015) and has written 40+ books on various historical topics, including the Civil War, Revolutionary War, World War I & II, the War of 1812 and ghost towns.
June 8, Program: DNA: The New Frontier In Genealogy presented by Ken Thomas who is a member of the Atlanta Chapter SAR. He graduated from Emory with a BA in History. In December 1973, he began working for the Historic Preservation Section/Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and was Historian for the National Register of Historic Places from 1978 to 2006. Since 1977 Ken has written a weekly genealogy column in the Sunday Atlanta Journal-Constitution, one of the longest running in the country. He has served or is serving on numerous boards, including the Georgia Historical Society (1985-1991, 1995-2001); the DeKalb History Center (1984-2013); the Wren’s Nest (1990s-2015); Friends of Georgia Archives and History (2006-present); Georgia Postcard Club, President; Georgia Professional Genealogists, Moderator; and Co-Chair of the Coalition to Preserve the Georgia Archives since 2011.

Sept 14, Program: The French in the American Revolution presented by Leslie Leighton, MD., PhD. retired medical doctor who also has a PhD in History from Emory University and is currently an instructor in the History Department at Georgia State University.
